Group A Strep?

By Jordan on June 22, 2009

Its feels like an absolute lifetime since I last wrote a post. My bad I do apologise but, I have good reasons! My poor little pumpkin Nathan, has been in Hospital. A couple of Monday’s ago I assumed Nathan was teething. He had rosey cheeks, he was moaning & had slight Diarreah? Being a Mother I was concerned none the less (even if he may just have been teething) so, opted to whip him down the Doc’s anyway. I called and got an emergency appointment & no sooner had I arrived I was on my way to Royal Berks Hospital to the Peadiatric Unit??  At this point I didn’t have the foggiest what was happening, all I did know was that I didn’t want them mentioning the ‘M’ word (Meningitis)

So, a Lumbar Puncture, Insertion of a Cannula, Urine & Blood Tests later I’m told that, Nathan will be in for at least 48 hours as they want to keep an eye out for…Meningitus *cue blubbering wreck, moi* Anywho, we get transferred to the High Dependancy Unit where I sit and think “why Nathan, he’s only 4 months old”  But saying that, why does it have to be anyone? (these are exactley my reasons for not believing in God)

More Blood tests & 48 hours later (which seemed an eternity) we were told “Nathan has Group A Strep” Huh? The Doctor’s were very vague about the whole situation, all they muttered was “Group A Strep is a very serious illness if not treated with Antibiotics” So, we decided to Google ye old ‘Group A Strep’ ourselves. Probably not the most wise move when trying to remain positive but, none the less we find out the real facts…And reamined at the hospital until further notice. We (Steve & I) did have a quick timeout by going to my Son Alfie’s first Sports Day! I wouldn’t of missed it for the world (His team Won By The Way!!!)

Approximately 20 needle wounds (the doctor’s found it impossible to find a new vein when Nathans Cannula came out) plenty of Clindamycin and 3 days later we were told Nathan was good to go but would need to keep up with the Clindamycin and Amoxicillin for a further 6 days.

That Friday that we were told “you can go now” is the happiest I’ve felt since giving birth. There’s nothing worse than seeing the one’s you love in agony, knowing there’s little you can do but stand by & watch. Nathan’s back to his good old happy self (see proof below) He really did go through 5 days of hell but, what a little soldier he was!! Boy am I glad he’s home. There sure is nothing like a thought provoking situation, like your child being ill for example, to make you think twice about the ridiculous things you dwell on & moan about in everyday life.

What is group A streptococcus (GAS)?

Group A Streptococcus is a bacterium often found in the throat and on the skin. People may carry group A streptococci in the throat or on the skin and have no symptoms of illness. Most GAS infections are relatively mild illnesses such as “strep throat,” or impetigo. Occasionally these bacteria can cause severe and even life-threatening diseases.

  1. That sounds awful. I’m glad Nathan’s doing better now.
